Chess- A Great Vehicle to Promote Diversity and Inclusion

By Drocella Mugorewera, The Diversity Trust Builder

My first encounter with chess was when I went to college in the former Soviet Union (USSR) in 1985 and Kiev, Ukraine– now. I was 21 years old. I watched people playing it in the championship on TV and then a few colleague students from Rwanda had curiosity to learn how to play it. We would gather at the weekend to watch them playing and it was fun. After graduating from college and returning back home in 1991, I lost connection to that sport.

I reconnected to chess recently when I met the changemaker Premier Chess CEO Evan Rabin at Esther Deutsch and Luke Van Every‘s In This Together Roundtable (ITTR) virtual event on March 28, 2023. During our follow up meeting, we exchanged about what we can do together and an idea of writing a guest blog on diversity and inclusion came up. I commend Premier Chess for all the great work they do to invest in future generations. Evan, I am glad that I met you. My dream is to see Chess embedded in our different communities and accessible to all.

Chess is often referred to as the “Game of Kings,” and while it may have been a game played by royalty in the past, today it is a game for everyone. Chess is a universal game, with players from all walks of life, cultures, and backgrounds enjoying the game. Chess is a great way to promote diversity and inclusion, as it is a game that knows no boundaries of age, gender, race, religion, or social status. In this article, we will discuss how chess can be a powerful tool for promoting diversity and inclusion and how it can bring people from all walks of life together.

Chess as a Level Playing Field

Chess is a game that is played on a level playing field. It does not matter who you are, where you come from, or what your background is; everyone has an equal chance to win. Chess is a game that requires skill, strategy, and intelligence, and anyone who possesses these traits can excel at it. There are no advantages or disadvantages based on gender, race, or social status. Chess is truly a game for everyone, and this makes it an excellent tool for promoting diversity and inclusion.

Promoting Diversity and Inclusion in Schools

Chess is a game that can be played by people of all ages, and it is an excellent tool for promoting diversity and inclusion in schools. Chess can be used to bring students from different backgrounds together, and it can help break down barriers that exist between different groups. Chess is a great way to promote teamwork and collaboration, as players must work together to achieve a common goal. It is also a great way to promote critical thinking, problem-solving, and decision-making skills, all of which are essential for success in life.

One example of how chess can be used to promote diversity and inclusion in schools is Chess-in-the-Schools. This program was started in New York City in 1986, and it provides free chess instruction to students in underserved communities. The program has helped break down barriers between different groups of students.

Promoting Diversity and Inclusion in the Workplace

Chess is not just a game for schools; it is also a game that can be used to promote diversity and inclusion in the workplace. Chess can be used to bring employees from different backgrounds together, and it can help to break down barriers that exist between different groups of employees. Chess is a great way to promote teamwork and collaboration in the workplace, as employees must work together to achieve a common goal. It is also a great way to promote critical thinking, problem-solving, and decision-making skills, all of which are essential for success in the workplace.

One example of how chess can be used to promote diversity and inclusion in the workplace is the Chess@Work program. This program, which was started in the United Kingdom in 2013, provides free chess instruction to employees in various companies. The program has been incredibly successful in promoting diversity and inclusion, and it has helped to break down barriers between different groups of employees.

bring people from different backgrounds together, and they can help to break down barriers that exist between different groups in the community. Chess is a great way to promote teamwork and collaboration, as players must work together to achieve a common goal. It is also a great way to promote critical thinking, problem-solving, and decision-making skills, all of which are essential for success in life.

One example of how chess can be used to promote diversity and inclusion in the community is Chess for Peace. This program was started in 2016 by the International Chess Federation; it aims to bring together players from different cultures and backgrounds to play chess and promote peace and understanding. It has been successful in promoting diversity and inclusion on a global level, as it encourages players to engage in friendly competition and learn from

one another, despite their differences. By promoting the values of fair play, respect, and teamwork, the program shows that chess is not just a game, but a powerful tool for building bridges between people from different cultures and backgrounds.

Chess can build Unity between law enforcement and super minorities.

Chess is a game that has been used to promote unity and understanding between people from different backgrounds and cultures. It is a game that requires strategic thinking, patience, and respect for the opponent, which makes it an excellent tool for promoting unity and respect between law enforcement officials and super minorities.

Super minorities, or marginalized communities, often have a complex relationship with law enforcement officials. Historical and systemic issues have created a divide between these communities and law enforcement, which can lead to a lack of trust and understanding. This divide can be bridged by promoting activities that bring both groups together in a neutral and non-confrontational environment.

One way in which chess can build unity between law enforcement officials and super minorities is through organized chess tournaments and events. These events can be held in a neutral location and can bring together individuals from both groups to play chess together. This creates an opportunity for individuals to engage with one another in a non-confrontational environment, promoting understanding and respect.

Another way in which chess can promote unity is through educational programs. Chess can be taught in schools and community centers, and law enforcement officials can be invited to participate in these programs. This provides an opportunity for law enforcement officials to interact with super minorities in a positive and constructive way, promoting understanding and respect.

Chess can also be used as a tool for conflict resolution.
In situations where there may be tension or disagreements between law enforcement officials and super minorities, chess can be used as a means to mediate and resolve conflicts. By engaging in a game of chess, both parties can work together to find a mutually beneficial solution, promoting unity and respect.

Finally, chess can be used to promote leadership skills among both law enforcement officials and super minorities. Chess requires strategic thinking, patience, and the ability to plan ahead. These skills can be applied in other areas of life, including leadership and decision-making. By promoting these skills, chess can help to build stronger leaders and promote unity between both groups.

Chess can be a powerful tool for building unity and understanding between law enforcement officials and super minorities. Through organized events, educational programs, conflict resolution, and leadership development, chess can promote respect, understanding, and unity. By using chess as a means to bring these groups together, we can work towards a more unified and harmonious society.

Chess can promote language diversity.

Promoting language diversity is important because language is a critical component of culture, and each language reflects the unique perspectives, values, and experiences of its speakers. Language diversity enriches our world and helps to foster understanding and respect among different cultures and communities.

In the context of chess, promoting language diversity can mean providing resources and materials in multiple languages, encouraging players from diverse linguistic backgrounds to participate in tournaments and events, and celebrating the linguistic diversity of the chess community. By embracing language diversity, we can help to create a more inclusive and welcoming chess culture that reflects the many diverse voices and perspectives of players around the world.

Even though Chess has been progressing worldwide, there are disparities to pay attention to in the field: gender disparity, economic disparity, geographic disparity, racial and ethnic disparity, and age disparity.

In conclusion, chess is a game that knows no boundaries and can be used as a powerful tool to promote diversity and inclusion. Whether it’s in schools, workplaces, or communities, chess can bring people from all walks of life together, and it can help to break down barriers that exist between different groups. By promoting critical thinking, problem-solving, and decision-making skills, chess can also help individuals to succeed in life regardless of their background. Therefore, we should continue to support and promote chess as a game that can be used to promote diversity and inclusion.
